We find it difficult to define authentic manhood because we rarely see it in our progressive postmodern society. In today’s world, manhood is considered emasculated, and masculinity is under attack. We are constantly bombarded with words such as clueless, knucklehead, bumbling idiot, etc., which express a negative viewpoint of man, husband, father. Read on to learn how to regain authentic manhood, and why it’s so critical.

The three B’s – billfold, ball-field, and bedroom – represent today’s concept of manhood. According to contemporary values, being a man is about how much you earn, what you do (a focus on athletes or entertainers), and your relationship with women, all of which is terribly wrong.

Jesus Christ is the model of authentic manhood. Why? Because he is the model!

It’s Time To Get Off The Bench and Play

Sadly, most of us men do not follow this example. We adhere to the Adam routine and here is why.

Adam, the first real human being—or in other words, the first man as noted in Genesis—didn’t do anything. He denied his intrinsic nature, preferring to remain passive. The problem, gentlemen, is that we each have the same flaw. We fail in the same way as Adam every day.

We refuse to take chances, we refuse to stand up and fight, and we refuse to rescue Eve. We’re repeats! When it came to leadership and bravery, Adam became a spectator.

We need the iron qualities that go with true manhood. We need the positive virtues of resolution, of courage, of indomitable will, of power to do without shrinking the rough work that must always be done.

We cannot get to where we want to go without help, and we need a reliable guide to show us the way. Jesus Christ is that guide! Jesus was not passive or timid, but rather confronted issues head on.

"My feet are like those of a deer, and my path is made smooth by God. He teaches me how to make war so that I may bend a bow of bronze, and He strengthens me. You have given me your shield of salvation, and your compassion has made me great. My path has been widened beneath me so that my feet won’t slip."

- 2 Samuel 22:33-37

Conclusion

Let’s split man’s obligation into three parts: the will to obey (God’s word), a spouse to love (children might accompany that), and a job to perform. In contrast to the saga of Adam and Eve, let us examine how Jesus lived these out: He fulfilled the will of His Father continually, he gave his life for his spouse (the church), and he finished the job he came to do at the Cross.

Humanity was reduced by Adam, and Jesus redeemed it.
