A Tale Of Resilience To Triumph After Setbacks
While playing for NCAA Division II Cal Poly Pomona, Rob Labagala was relegated to the bench. Despite having a dream of playing professional basketball in the Philippines, he was given the fewest minutes of play. His team was loaded with superstars, so he was relegated to the bench. Finally, in one of the season’s last games, he was given one second to play. One second with the ball, and he fumbled. This happened on national television.
The Choice To Make
Despite his disappointment, Rob impressed his coaches with his resilience. After mourning his blunder, Rob turned to Matthew 6:33 for comfort: “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, live righteously, and he will provide for you everything you need.”
Having recognized his lack of stature and ability, Rob increased his practice hours and developed his mind, he returned to practice. Prayer, studying, and playing were the three things God impressed on him. After a long and challenging detour, Rob was finally able to participate in professional basketball as the oldest rookie at the age of 26. He led his team to a championship six years later. However, that wasn’t his only achievement; he realized that basketball was a gift with a purpose.
Despite all of his blunders, Rob was not defined by them. He, like you and me, was raised up by the Lord and loved for who he was. His purpose was to inspire and serve the next generation through basketball, and he continues to do so today.
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” — Psalm 37:4 ESV
