Only For Men: How To Become Truly Masculine

What is masculinity? Merriam-Webster defines masculinity as “the quality or nature of the male sex: the quality, state, or degree of being masculine or manly.” Many modern day institutions state that masculinity is the social expectations of being a man, that the term ‘masculinity’ refers to the roles, behaviors and attributes that are considered appropriate for boys and men in a given society. That masculinity is constructed and defined socially, historically and politically, rather than being biologically driven. But do these sources and worldviews of masculinity define a true man? There are many (many) discussions to be had about cultural masculinity versus biblical manhood. Culture has much to say about what is and what is not manly. Today, we will avoid that topic.

Instead, let’s examine one of the most universally respected standards of manhood (husbanding). Scripture particularly emphasizes this quality. See Ephesians 5 for starters; there are too many Biblical references to list here.

A Man Becomes Truly Masculine With Love

How can a husband love well? Here are 10 ways, not listed in order. Also, this list is not complete.

1. His wife and children are his first concern.

2. He is generous with his time.

3. He speaks gently.

4. He persistently perseveres.

5. He behaves wisely.

6. He sticks to his goal.

7. He is always encouraging.

8. He is selfless in serving.

9. He tries to make up for his mistakes by seeking reconciliation and forgiveness.

10. He is a good listener.

Raise the bar

In a world where the bar of masculinity is set pretty low, men need a real definition and guide of what a true man is and ought to be. In order to represent true masculinity, a man must be in God’s word (the Bible). And to live out this Biblical instruction (God’s commands), a man must take practical steps to live out his faith if he believes in Christ Jesus. He must choose to live a certain way that is pleasing to God, rather than pleasing himself and doing what he wants or does not want to do. This knowledge and understanding imparted by God to man through the Holy Spirit is the only way for man to ever stand a chance at being truly masculine. Otherwise he is susceptible to every kind of attack by Satan against himself and his family. He will be led adrift. A true man needs a true north heading and a safe harbor to pull into in the storm. God’s way is the only way and shelter for a true man.
